That's the problem with the primary system, IMHO
The crazies of both sides have a larger voice than they should just by the general breakdown of things. Say America is split 50-50; that means a 20% block of citizens in any one party -- if it's highly motivated -- can dictate the candidate.
I'm of the opinion that the United States is broken down into about 20% left-wing wackos, 20% right-wing wackos, and 40% who are at varying stages in the middle. Over the past couple decades, the wackos have discovered ways to grab more and more power in this primary system, and it's keeping the best candidates out of the general election. Sad, but I'm not sure how to change it.
